Life of a student…
The term is quite simple but the complexities associated with the life of a student is not that simple enough. It is a beautiful blend of campus lifestyle and a wide variety of quests and tests which tend to lead towards the goals that are woven by friends and family – in particular – and achievements in making the careers.
The first day at the school nearby and finding some new friends and a few foes in the form of the teachers and definitely the books… Quite interesting are the days that are filled with innocence and adventure.
Clock ticked, the calender rolled on… and in just a decades time the hurdle of board exams come to the very door step. Life is not that simple. Isn’t that so?
The best part of it is living in a hostel. Detachment from family pains – to some extent – and the holy term is “Home-sickness”. Rest, its all very pleasant looking days and more lovely nights… Someone truly said that “If you don’t stay in a hostel in your college life, you are missing the biggest possible fun!” Who? Well I don’t know… maybe inner me!
Staying in a hostel the ability to stand alone and face the wind is always tested. The famous term “Ragging” finds a place too. From introductory session to mere teasing and the final menace. Rather the order is reversed in many cases and introduction becomes at the end only.
A place very similar to the Alcatraz Island, but filled with fun and a bond that always attracts to be there always! Hostel – a place far from home but is home within a campus. The food tickles your patience of eating rather than your taste buds; the room-mate nearby fusses himself on the phone and the “wall-mate” dances to a new tune – but you have exams the next dawn and thus is helpless! :(   ;(
Its not guaranteed that the water taps will always ooze out water and nor that you will not end up having a cup of non-veg tea some fine morning! The lights might turn off when you want them to be just the opposite and might remain so for days… The sound of foxes howling nearby might frighten you but the next moment you end up howling back at the gang of the foxes! And if you are over-enthusiastic in taking introduction of the “most-welcome” juniors, maybe you find a place in the latest piece of paper that hangs in the college notice board under the headline “Final Warning”; if not a “Love letter” from your college Principal to your Dad, back at home.
But; and is quite a very big BUT; if you try to skip these days and try to confined yourself to your relatives nearby – you are missing the most beautiful – happening – days of your life. The late night gossips, the mutual helping out in prone or proxy, combine studies, arguments over silly matters, cricket matches, cards session, ‘singing’ and ‘dancing’ to the tune of Summer of 69 and the vomiting vile drooling at the thought of the hostel food would all be forlorn experience. Visiting the ATM at 2 AM, buying a packet of gutka (costs Re 1) for a senior from the 1000 rupee note given by him, initiating hunger-strike after having Chicken-Roti from outside and the emotional attyachar (harassment) with the seniors…
College life… all say this is the best phase of life. For me it is the most valuable phase and any emotions recollected in tranquility are sweeter than emotions enjoyed at the spur of the moment. Although good times are there to die out and bad times are signs that inform the advent of fresh joys; this part of life can never be replaced and will always have a due numero-uno spot. Ragging is said to be the biggest mole to this lovely tale but have a thought on that. My earlier post on ragging being just a hiccup might throw some newer light.
Now the phase has faded away leaving me with a bunch full of room-mates all busy with their own job – own life. The shades are my friend now and the beautiful memories mixed with emotions of joy and sadness calls me back to those days of fun and excitement. I want to get back… till then, its adieu, my friends….
Dedicated to all my friends, seniors and juniors of B. Borooah College Hostel (Guwahati), PC Hostel (NSHM Durgapur) and to all those living their best phase of life in the second home called HOSTEL!

I am glad to see a post that is related to the students. Although many people said that students life is the best life and it is that time which is remembered as the memorable time of life. But it seems that now a days student’s life has become some very difficult to be defined as its getting some great stress due to burden of studies and many other issues. But they can be eliminated if we review our course and i request the concern authorities to look into this matter seriously. By the way a very nice post….

I like your post and i am sure that many others liked it too especially students. Today’s student life has many burdens in it like he has to study a lot and he gains a lot of home work to do after school he has to give too much time to his studies in order to be competitive with other students. A students also has rights to play so that he could remain in a healthy state of mind but due to their tough schedule of studies he could not play regularly, which is essential for any student. I think all the students have rights to enjoy their student life and i am sure that if they manages their time in an efficient way then they could avail it. Thanks for the post….

Great Post! Sometimes students is not just a student. They also need fun aside from doing papers works and studying all day. But always remember, in order to succeed we must know how to balance both study and fun. Time management is the most important. Thanks for sharing your very interesting article.
